SE-SFM-030 Static Electric Fieldmeter

Handheld non-contact surface charge measurement up to 200 kV — two auto-selected ranges, polarity display, hold function

Product Description

The FÖGE SE-SFM-030 is a precision handheld static electric fieldmeter designed for engineers, process technicians and quality managers who need to investigate, quantify and diagnose static electricity problems on industrial production lines. Static charge is invisible and imperceptible until it is strong enough to cause an operator shock — by which point it may already have caused dust contamination, coating failures, material misalignment or damage to electronic components. The SE-SFM-030 makes the invisible visible: it measures the electrostatic surface voltage on any non-conductive material or surface at a fixed 100 mm distance, displaying the magnitude in volts and the polarity — positive or negative. The meter covers zero to 200,000 volts (200 kV) across two automatically selected ranges: 0–20 kV with 10 V resolution, and 20–200 kV with 100 V resolution. Accuracy at calibration is ±5%. A hold function freezes the reading — essential when the measurement position is awkward. Battery-powered and fully portable, the SE-SFM-030 is supplied complete with a carrying case, battery and earth cord, and is the essential companion tool for installing, commissioning and troubleshooting any FÖGE static elimination system.

How It Works

Static electricity is a coulombic charge — it forms a current when it moves, but is difficult to measure when stationary. The SE-SFM-030 measures surface voltage using Q = CV, where Q is the charge on the surface, C is the capacitance between the surface and the meter's sensor, and V is the voltage. The key to accurate measurement is holding the meter at exactly 100 mm from the surface — this fixed distance creates a constant, known capacitance (C). With C fixed, the voltage V varies directly and proportionally with the charge Q. The sensor detects the electrostatic field at 100 mm without touching the surface, and the electronics display the corresponding surface voltage. The two measurement ranges switch automatically when the reading passes the 20 kV threshold.

How to use the SE-SFM-030

Follow these steps for accurate, repeatable measurements:

01

Connect the earth cord to a known earth point (e.g. a grounded machine frame or earth terminal).

02

Switch the meter on and allow 30 seconds for the electronics to stabilise.

03

Hold the sensor end of the meter at exactly 100 mm from the surface to be measured.

04

Point the sensor directly at the surface — do not hold at an angle.

05

Read the voltage and polarity from the display. Note both the sign (+ or −) and the magnitude.

06

If the reading position is awkward, press HOLD to freeze the display, then move to a comfortable position to read the value.

07

To map static distribution, take readings at multiple points across the surface, recording location and value for each.

08

To verify ionisation effectiveness: measure before switching on the ionising equipment, then measure again after — compare to confirm neutralisation.

Use Cases & Applications

Applications What the SE-SFM-030 tells you
Diagnosing static problems Investigate dust contamination, coating defects, or operator shocks caused by static electricity mapping
and identify the cause.
Commissioning ionisation equipment Verify that a newly installed ionising bar, blower or nozzle is correctly positioned and operating at the required neutralisation
level before the line runs at production speed.
Setting acceptance standards Establish measurable static level targets (e.g. surface charge below ±1 kV) that define acceptable performance for the ionisation
system — creating a quantified quality standard.
Routine performance checks Periodically measure static levels at key points on running production lines to confirm that ionisation equipment has not
degraded.
Troubleshooting ESD events Locate the source of electrostatic discharge events in electronics assembly or packaging lines.
Pre- and post-cleaning verification Measure static levels before and after cleaning antistatic bars to confirm that cleaning has restored full ionisation performance.
Material and process investigation Characterise how much static a specific material, machine operation or process speed generates —
to specify the correct ionisation solution from the outset.

What you can determine

What you can determine Why it matters
Location of static charge Identify exactly where on the production line or machine static is accumulating — which material, process step or zone.
Magnitude of charge Quantify how much static is present in volts — from a few hundred volts up to 200 kV — to assess severity and select the correct ionisation solution.
Polarity Determine whether the charge is positive or negative — essential for understanding the generation mechanism and verifying that an AC ioniser is correctly neutralising the charge.
Effectiveness of ionisation equipment Measure static levels before and after installing an ionising bar or blower to confirm the equipment is neutralising charge to the required level.
Charge distribution across a surface Map static levels at multiple points to identify uneven distribution or localised problem areas.
Charge build-up rate Monitor how quickly static accumulates during production to determine the optimal ionisation intensity and cleaning schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

The SE-SFM-030 measures surface voltage using Q = CV. At 100 mm, the capacitance C is a fixed, known value. Holding at a different distance changes C, making the voltage reading incorrect. Use the distance indicator on the meter or a 100 mm spacer gauge if precise positioning is difficult.
The polarity shows whether the charge is positive or negative. This is important because it reveals how the charge is being generated — certain materials and processes consistently produce one polarity — and confirms that an AC ioniser is correctly neutralising the charge.
The earth cord grounds the meter, providing the reference potential needed for accurate measurement. Without a proper earth connection, the meter can float at an undefined potential and give unstable or incorrect readings. Always connect to a reliable earth point before measuring.
The SE-SFM-030 is designed for non-conductive materials such as plastics, films, paper and textiles. Conductive materials normally drain charge to ground and will show near-zero readings. If a conductive material is electrically isolated and has accumulated charge, the meter may display a reading, but this is not the primary use case.
Annual calibration by a qualified service facility is recommended for instruments in regular use. Contact FÖGE for calibration service options.
Yes. The SE-SFM-030 measures non-contact at 100 mm — the sensor does not need to touch the material or machine. Take care to maintain the correct 100 mm distance and avoid contact with moving parts. For very high-speed webs, take readings from a fixed, stable position.
